If you are thinking of becoming a plumber, there are a number of steps or rather there are a number of requirements that you need to meet.
Start by getting your GED or high school diploma
If you are thinking of becoming a plumber, you need to understand that you must have a strong foundation in science especially physics, math especially geometry and algebra as well as computer skills like computer-aided drafting. If you have the opportunity or if it is offered where you are undertaking your training, then it may also be a good idea for you to take additional classes on blueprint reading and drafting.
Make sure that you have your vocational training
It is a good idea for you to go ahead and take a plumbing vocational class that may be offered at either your community, school or training college. The certificate that you are going to earn is going to be on various topics like drainage systems and water supply. You may also need to look at the piping equipment of each of them. Vocational training is very important since it will enable you to look at different areas that are related to plumbing.
Make sure that you complete an apprenticeship training
For you to be able to receive the most effective training on how you can become a plumber, it is important for you to undertake an apprenticeship program. As an apprentice, you may go for between four to five years whereby you are going to have the opportunity to cover all the different aspects of the plumbing trade. You can be able to get an apprenticeship training from local unions and organizations like the National Association of Plumbing Heating and Associated builders. Apprenticeship programs may also be a way of you getting more experience in this field. The best part about it all is that you are still going to be paid as you are working as an apprentice.
Get a license
Most states require that a plumber has the right license for them to be able to start practicing. Even though the licensing requirements may differ from one state to another, you still need to have at least two to five years of experience. You also need to pass an exam of the local codes and plumbing trades and must have passed them for you to be able to get a license. It would be a good idea for you to talk to your state or do your own research in case you want to learn about the licensing needs, the qualifications as well as the training hours that are necessary for you to become a plumber in your region.
