DON’T Pay for Moving Supplies – You can find used boxes that are free at restaurants, bars and stores. You do not need bubble wrap or other packing supplies either; towels, linens, tees, blankets and sweaters work just fine.

Give each room its own day where you pack and get rid of the clutter you don’t need. You should also ensure that your home insurance policy is updated. Just check with your agent to be sure. You can also delegate duties to take the pressure off. Work with a friend or family member who knows how you do things.
Allow yourself at least one day per room to throw away unwanted items and to pack what you want to keep. Take your time and go through the process carefully so you won’t have to repeat the purge process a second time at your new home.
Make sure your homeowner’s insurance policy is up to date. Personal property is covered no matter where it is in the world. While your mover should have coverage, your personal policy may pick up any differences if there is damage. Check with your agent.
You can’t be in two places at once. Make sure you have a responsible friend or family member overseeing the moving process in either your old or new home.
Print specific directions to your new home and give them to everyone helping with the move. Be sure to include contact phone numbers so that anyone who gets lost or needs help can reach you.
Do not let your moving truck leave your old home without checking each room to make sure large items haven’t been left behind.

There are certain things you can’t delegate for instance you should not send your friend to get the estimate. Deal with the movers personally. Don’t pack everything until the estimator is done.
Don’t have a friend or realtor take your place at the estimate!
Sometimes this is unavoidable, which is understandable. But the best thing to do is to take an afternoon off of work and dedicate that time to have 2 or 3 movers come out. Personally meeting with and hearing from the people who will be handling everything you own is a great way to give yourself extra peace-of-mind as well.
Don’t pack everything before the estimate!
If you have everything packed before the estimate that works too! But, don’t feel the need to have everything boxed before the estimators come. Estimators are trained to look at unpacked items in your closets and cupboards and estimate the required boxes needed. Even better, most movers will provide you their inventory with a breakdown of how many boxes and the type of boxes you’ll need to get everything packed!
